Scope and content

Adrian Simmonds lived and worked in his shop on the western side of the Market Square for many years. June Taylor and Iris Wheeler nee Martin (married to Andy) were working there when Adrian bought the shop and were with him right up to his retirement. Adrian employed several young people giving them a Saturday job and giving them a wonderful introduction to working with the public; Vanda Govier, Bruce Piercy, Keith and Brian Rouse to name a few. To begin with Adrian sold fruit and veg, a little pet food, bread and a few odds and ends. Listening to what people wanted he ended up specialising in pet food and a wonderful range of everyday household items and tried to introduce 6 new items a week. He also sold a few sweets and a range of snuff. When Adrian retired and closed his shop in the Market Square, he adapted the shop area to make a workshop where he painstakingly digitised his many photographs and used the shelving to display his collections of many interesting items. We filmed a talk with Adrian when he was still running his shop https://youtu.be/ZffpW81Wn4safter and again in his retirement which you can see at https://youtu.be/ZffpW81Wn4s Adrian died in February 2014 and his funeral service is included in the pdf.
