Scope and content

This newspaper cutting from the Witney Gazette of March 21st 1958 recounts the story of three members of the local gentry, Mr Staples-Brown from The Elms, Dr Oates from what today is known as Rosebank Nursing home and the local solicitor Mr Ridgen giving masterly performances in song, comic song and duo-dialogues. Charles Taunt, our skilled organist also joined in the entertainment and was the leader of our string orchestra and brass band. £7 was raised at a concert in 1898 for the local cricket club.

Just after the turn of the 19th to 20 century a fight brewed and took place in a local field between two women who had been at logger-heads for some time. In 1958 some could remember the fight but professed to be unable to remember who it was suggesting it could have been any of 50 Bampton women.

This article also recalls deep snows and floods.
