Scope and content

On Saturday September 6th 1986 the Oxfordshire Historic Churches Trust organised the first ever Cycle Ride - in later years to Ride & Stride - to help raise money for churches in the county. Half the money raised by members of a church stay with that church and the remainder goes to a central kitty to help one or more churches in dire need to repair their structure. Up to 2,000 people were expected to take part include Home Secretary Douglas Hurd, the MP for Witney and his wife. In 1986 the trust had given £60,000 between 50 churches. It was estimated that one million pounds would be needed to get churches of all faiths into sound condition.
