Scope and content
Hayrick fires were sadly, a far too common occurrence 100 years ago. Many of the men smoked and steam engines used to drive some machinery spat out sparks which is not a good combination with lovely dry hay and straw. These pictures were taken in 1918 and 1919 at Hobbs Buildings, the farm about a quarter of a mile out of Bampton on the Brize Norton road. The fire appliance was hand pumped in those days and it took many men to keep it going.
