Scope and content

The War Memorial in the Market Square has names on from the WWI, WWII and Afghanistan. These photographs take you around the memorial so that you can see every name on it. It also shows the newly added name in 2009 of Jason Mackie (Afghanistan) and all the lettering being newly painted in readiness for Remembrance Sunday 2009. There is a war memorial inside the Post Office in the Town Hall which lists men lost in WWI; you can see it if you look up on your right as you go in. Inside St Mary The Virgin there is a memorial in the South Transept which lists every man who fought in WWI. A name with a gold cross next to it denotes the man was killed, a red cross that he returned home injured. There are two other plaques in the church which list war dead, one for WWI and one for WWII. The final pictures was taken at the service of dedication of the War Memorial in September 1920. Two buildings were taken down to make way for this memorial, one was Wenman's bakery shop with a bay window and the other was a tiny cottage where you could buy fish and chips on two days a week.
