Scope and content

This recording of Bampton Traditional Morris Men dancing Maid of The Mill was made in 1987. It is preceded by Francis Shergold explaining that in his early days of dancing with Jingy Wells and the team, there was no pre-arranged rota for visiting the big houses, you just turned up and hoped to be invited in, but the owners were usually waiting for the dancers to arrive. There are few dances which have only one tune for them but 'Maid of The Mill' is one of them. Most dances have more than one tune associated with them. Bampton dances in general are so straight forward that any piece of music with the requisite number of bars can be used, hence such obscure party pieces as The Yellow Submarine, The Ashling (Rod's second tune for Bobbing Around which Francis absolutely hated) and of course, Speed The Plough. The recording lasts 3 mins 10 secs
