Scope and content

This is the 2nd of two articles in successive issues of Country Life magazine July 1946. There are pictures of the Grammar School which now houses the library and the exhibition space called the Vesey room used by Bampton Community Archive and West Ox Arts, Kilmore House, part of the inside of the Horde chapel inside St Mary's, St Mary's (St Mary The Virgin Church), the Deanery and Churchgate House, known today as being the home of Mrs Crawley in the fictional 'Downton Abbey,' The article explains a good deal about Bampton being a 3 portion church with three vicarages, the deanery and Ham Court, which it refers to as Bampton Castle although it was never a castle, simply a large house whose owner got permission to crenellate part of the walls.
