Scope and content

This picture was taken from the middle of the road in Cheapside. On the left is the Town Hall with nearly all the archways filled in; the two on the right in the sunshine were unblocked so the space inside could be used as a bus stop shelter a little later in the C20th. The present day Abbey Properties was a drapers shop which around the middle of the C20th had the windows recessed, pillars put in in the line of the windows and petrol pumps installed when the site became the Central Garage. Apart from being a garage you could also buy a gas oven there. To the right is The Talbot.; the railings were removed during WWII. At the extreme lower right a little of the railings can be seen that were around The Lamb Inn and anyone going there for a drink would say they were going to The Tree because there was a huge Ash tree just inside the railings.
