JL Hughes Owens ran the ATC with the invaluable help of Wing Commander T Lloyd-Jones of RAF Brize Norton. They won the Pickford cup as the best flight in the squadron three years running. When H O had to retire, a succession of leaders failed to inspire and then many left to do their National Service. In 1966 there were few lads left despite having an excellent HQ in Aston Road. Compulsory purchase of the land, Calais Farm, in 1984 really finished off the ATC in Bampton
