Scope and content

ATC group circa 1952. Names on the photograph are Dennis Harris, Les Harrison, Billy Buckingham, Brian Lawrence, Philip Horne, Norman Craddock, Ron Cross, Raymond 'Boxer' Paintin, Jimmy Harris, Harry Owen and Wing Commander T Lloyd-Jones.

JL Hughes-Owens ran the ATC with the invaluable help of Wing Commander T Lloyd-Jones of RAF Brize Norton. They won the Pickford Cup as the best flight in the squadron three years running. When Hughes Owens had to retire, a succession of leaders failed to inspire and then many left to do their National Service.

In 1966 when Hughes Owens wrote this piece, there were few lads left despite having an excellent HQ in Aston Road. Compulsory purchase of the land - which was part of Calais Farm - in 1984 really finished off the ATC in Bampton
