This is Church View looking north with the spire of St Mary The Virgin church visible at the far end. There is an open ditch running along on the right with large slabs over to allow access to each property.
Richard Buckingham grew up on the street and says
"Church View was still like that in the early to mid 1960’s. As kids the gutter was ideal for playing army games in. Some of the slabs were high enough that we could crawl through underneath! We were sad when the road was improved and the gutter was covered in. However, the road surface was smooth and ideal for roller skating. We played “roller football” and “roller hockey”. As more kids joined in, the goal posts (jumpers) were moved further down the road."
The lack of roads as a play area for children has really altered their playing life.
