The Bampton Community Archive is trying to get a list of all the wells that used to be in Bampton. It was the late 1950s before there was mains water to the village. If sufficient information can be gathered an exhibition on wells in Bampton will be put on.

Bampton gold ring, sold at auction for £10,000

The map was produced in 1921. The first map is has been reused to show where council houses were to be built on the south side of New Road and where the sewerage pipes were to be laid to the sewerage works along the Buckland Road.

Mains sewerage came to Bampton in 1958 after a long struggle and at a cost of £105,000. Miss Marjorie Pollard was the driving force but in the end, it was the death of Horace Morse who emptied the 'night soil' buckets twice a week which made it imperative. Jack Bellinger was the first manager of the sewerage works.

Sam Bennett sharpening a scythe. Sam used to walk all the way from Wilmington to help play for the Morris and stayed with Albert and Mary Elizabeth Townsend at Castle Farm. To earn his keep he’d stay on for a while helping to cut the grass for hay.

The people of Bampton always pull together when push comes to shove. Residents got fed up with the litter about the paths and lanes and organised a mass clean-up. This article gives much more detail about it.
