Ploughing Match FFF&B 1980

  • BCA - 2022.3965
  • Item
  • 1988

Series of Photographs taken early 1980 featuring some of the machinery on display. The photos are described as follows:
BA40FA~1 - Ploughing with teams of 3 bullocks, young boy leading the front bullock and a ploughman on the reins. Each team pulled a single furrow plough.
BA2357~1 - Mr Fred Hornsby at the front of the combine. Fred worked for John Henly on Bampton Deanery farm and in later years for his son Roy. This picture approximately 1980.
BA0C0D~1 - Detail of a traction engine. There would have been one at opposite sides of the field and the implement, such as a plough or potato drill, would be pulled from side to side by the steel hawser seen here under the engine. The engine provided the power to turn the cable drum to wind in the cable. Originally the engine would have been fired by solid fuel but many were later converted to run on oil.
BABDA1~1 - Douglas Read, OBE born 1926 taking part in a ploughing match. Doug got his MBE several years after this picture was taken and it was for services to ploughing. He has was national ploughing match champion more than once and in later years was a judge for the High Cut class at the Fairford, Faringdon, Filkins and Burford Ploughing Match. (Known to many locals as the 3Fs and a B).
BA4883~1 - The driver of a plough being drawn across the field by a traction engine at the Fairford, Faringdon, Filkins and Burford Ploughing match.

The Development of Printed Maps of Oxfordshire: From GOUGH to Google

  • BCA - 2017.371

  • 1477 - 1877

In October 2012 the Bampton Environmental Watch Group had a wonderful talk given by John Leighfield on the history of maps and in particular maps of Oxfordshire and Bampton. It was very interesting to note that the first maps of Bampton showed the rivers and streams but no roads, showing the importance of waterways. It really is worth looking at the maps of Bampton carefully, you'll see just how old some buildings are, where the mill was in Bampton and Kerwoods Yard which was one area for the very poor with dwellings that had no land with them, they afforded the occupier a roof as opposed to 'the park bench' but no land on which to produce any food. It's referred to in early census forms and people come to Bampton asking where it is - it's on page 15 of this pdf

Hay cart by Meadow Farm, Buckland Road

  • BCA - 2020.2443
  • Item
  • early 20th century

This picture must have been taken early in the twentieth century. It shows two ladies, a girl and a boy in charge of a hay cart and shire horse. It is by Meadow Farm along the Buckland Road. The style of cart is that of an Oxford cart.

Suzanne White says
"This is a photograph that I have recently found of my great grandfather as a boy, Edward William Portlock (Clarke) - born in 1893 with his sisters Elsie and Eva Portlock outside a cottage where they lived at the time, along the Buckland Road as seen on the 1901 and 1911 census (I found the cottages on google and although now extended can clearly see they are still there). I think the picture would have been taken somewhere around 1906/8. I think the lady with them could be their mother who was called Elizabeth and I think her maiden name could have been Radband-Shepard but if that is the case I can’t find out too much about her."
