Lis Banham, well known to so many Bamptonians, died April 17th after a courageous fight with cancer. She was a wonderfully active member of the Bampton community. She was one of the founder members of The Bush Club; she helped in the Community Shop; she 'sat' for the Archive in the Vesey room; she played bridge in the Bridge Club for many years and one thing she enjoyed doing was providing the table decorations for the club’s two parties each year. She was a member of the Flower Guild and loved her garden which she opened for Bampton’s Hidden Gardens and many people will remember her for starting and organising the Theatre Club, counting its member on to the return bus to ensure nobody got left behind; she was an active member for fundraising for ZANE, the Zimbabwe project. She always turned up for meetings of the various village groups and was always encouraging and helpful. She flew with the WAAF and you will be able to read much more about her in the next issue of The Lowdown but in the meantime, there is a delightful piece about Lis in the April issue. Her father was an Air Vice Marshall, the only member of the R.A.F. to shoot down an enemy aircraft in both WW1 and WW2. She will be greatly missed by many of us.

LIS BANHAM
Lis Banham, who died on 17th April after a brave fight against cancer, made a truly invaluable contribution to life in Bampton, and has left a wonderful legacy from the forty five years that she lived in the village. To name a few? Lis started the Bampton Theatre Club where she will be remembered for her boundless energy and organisation, especially when making sure no-one got left behind on the buses; she was a stalwart of the Bridge Club for many years; she was a very accomplished gardener and her garden in Church Street regularly featured in Bampton’s Hidden Gardens; and she was a long-time and much valued member of the Bampton Flower Guild making arrangements for church and community events. Lis was actively involved in the Community Shop, the Bampton Community Archive where she sat in the Vesey Room, and BZP, the fund-raising society for different projects in Zimbabwe. She was a leading force behind the building of the Bampton Youth Club on Church View. In addition, Lis was at various times a Parish Councillor, a volunteer hospital driver and a Witney Citizens Advice Bureau member, truly a lady for all seasons and of many talents. Lis was born on 21st February 1931; her father was an Air Vice Marshall and was the only man to shoot down enemy aircraft in both World Wars. She joined the Women's Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF) in 1949 as a Pilot Officer and served with RAF Intelligence during the Malayan Conflict all over South East Asia - Singapore, Malaya, Borneo, Vietnam, Ceylon, Hong Kong, and the Philippines. She returned to RAF Coltishall in East Anglia where she met her husband, Dickie Banham, an RAF fighter pilot. As a Flying Officer, she left the WAAF upon marrying in 1957 (a necessity in those days). Lis and Dickie moved around with the Air Force and lived in Washington DC for two years while Kennedy was President, and they also had spells in Ghana, and Cyprus during the Turkish invasion of 1974-76. They were posted back to the UK and to RAF Brize Norton in December 1976, where Lis fell in love with the local area and decided she wanted to settle there, having spent a life of moving houses around the world. They moved into Tudor Cottage, Bampton in the Spring of 1978 and she remained there for the rest of her life. Lis will be much missed by so many in Bampton and beyond. ~ A Life Remembered ~

Les and Stella King owned a department store Kings of Bampton in the High Street. selling, haberdashery, toys, shoes and all manner of household items. Baby clothes, underwear, ladies and gent's clothes and made to measure garments.

John and his wife Lizanne have lived in Bampton for many years and for much of that time they were churchwardens and sacristans. They were a couple who just quietly did much for the village without fanfare. Lizanne made recycled cards for several years which were much sort after in the Vesey room. It’s good to know their three sons don’t live far away and promised John they would take good care of Lizanne.

This Indenture made the tenth day of May in the forty eighth year of the reign of our Sovereign Lord George the Third by the Grace of God of the united Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland King Defender of the Faith and in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and eight Between Edward Whitaker of Bampton in the County of Oxford Esquire Joseph Andrews of Bampton aforesaid, Surgeon John Fludger Salisbury late of Bampton aforesaid but now of the City of Oxford Surgeon Barnard Green of Bampton aforesaid Cow Leech John Shingleton of Bampton aforesaid yeoman William Williams of Bampton aforesaid yeoman Thomas Gillet of Weald in the Parish of Bampton aforesaid yeoman and Thomas Townsend of Weald aforesaid yeoman of the one part and William Andrews of Bampton aforesaid Butcher of the other part Witnesseth that for and in the Consideration of the Yearly rents Covenants payments and agreements herein reserved mentioned and contained which on the part and behalf of the said William Andrews are and ought to be done performed and kept according to the time intent and meaning of these presents They the said Edward Whitaker Joseph Andrews John Fludger Salisbury Barnard Green which shall during the Term hereby granted stand grow or be in or upon the same premises with free Liberty of Ingress Egress Regress way and passage to and the said Eward Whitaker Joseph Andrews John day of October and the fifth day of April yearly the first payment to begin and be made on the tenth day of October next ensuing the date thereof and so continue to be paid half yearly during the said Term and also yielding and paying on the days and times and in manner aforesaid unto the said Eward Whitaker Joseph Andrews John Fludger Salisbury Barnard Green John Shingleton William Williams Thomas Gillet and Thomas Townsend their Heirs or assigns the further yearly sum of twenty pounds for each acres of the said hereby demised premises and so in proportion for more than an acre which the said William Andrews his Executor or administrators shall plough dig up or convert into tillage the first payment thereof to begin and made on such of the said days of payment as shall happen next after such ploughing digging up and converting into Tillage and so continue to be paid half yearly during the said term And the said William Andrews for himself his Heirs Executors and Administrators doth assigns by these presents in manner and form following that is to say that he the said William Andrews his Executors or Administrators or some or one of them shall and will well and truly pay or cause rents or Sums of Money on the days and times and in manner aforesaid without making any deduction or abatement whatsoever And that if the said rents or Sums of Money or any part thereof shall be behind or unpaid in part or in all for the space of twenty one days next after either of the said days or times of payment whereon the same ought to be paid as aforesaid being lawfully demanded or if the said William Andrews shall assign this present Lease or subdemise the said Premises hereby leased or any part thereof without the License or consent of the said Edward Whitaker Joseph Andrews John Fludger Salisbury Barnard Green John Shingleton William Williams Thomas Gillet and Thomas Townsend their Heirs and Assigns under their Hands and Seals first had and obtained that then and in either of the said cases it shall and may be lawful to and for the said Edward Whitaker Joseph Andrews John Fludger Salisbury Barnard Green John Shingleton William Williams Thomas Gillet and Thomas Townsend their Heirs and Assigns into and upon the said demised premises or any part thereof in the name of the whole to reenter and the same to have again repossess and reenjoy as in their first and former Estate or Estates any thing herein contained to the contrary thereof in any wise howsoever notwithstanding And also that he the said William Andrews his Executors and Administrators shall and will pay bear and discharge all and all manner of Taxes rates Levies charges and assessments whatso ever as well parliamentary as parochial which shall or may be taxed rated charged or assessed on the said premises or for or in respect thereof or of any part thereof or on the said Edward Whitaker Joseph Andrews John Fludger Salisbury Barnard Green John Shingleton William Williams Thomas Gillet and Thomas Townsend their Heirs and Assigns for or in respect thereof the Landtax Landlord’s property tax and quitrent only excepted which the said Edward Whitaker Joseph Andrews John Fludger Salisbury perfect repair and at the end of the said Term leave the same in such good and perfect repair and shall not nor will lop or top any Maiden Tree or lop or Shroud any other Tree or cut the Hedges of the said Premises but at the proper and Seasonable time of the year nor more than once in the said Term and shall not mow the Grass more than once in each year of the said Term and the said Edward
