Stan Smith, reported missing in WWII

This letter, dated November 1st 1944 was send by Stan Smith's commanding officer to Stan's father informing him that Stan was missing but may be a POW. He was a POW and near the end of the was became one of the POWs who took part in the what became known as the Long March. They were marched from East Germany keeping ahead of the advancing Russians. Stan walked almost 1,000 miles. He survived.

Shirt Race in 1983

Although the caption talks about a 'Street Fayer' the picture is actually of Jim Smith and Martin Barber in fancy dress for the Shirt Race organised annually by the SPAJERS ie the Society for the Preservation of Ancient Junketing. The society organises fun things to raise money for the senior citizens of Bampton and Lew.

The Friends of St Mary's have recently been arranging a series of 3 talks, one in Feb, March and April to raise funds for the church. This poster was for the Feb 2018 talk entitled
"The Graveyard Shift: surgery and body snatching at Guy's Hospital in the 19th century."
The talk was given by Professor Roger Jones.

Playgroup Christmas Bazaar Dec 2nd 1983

Back in the 1980s a club or society had a bazaar or jumble sale almost every Saturday in the WI Hall and there would be a queue of people waiting to come in. This was the Christmas Bazaar held by the Playgroup to raise funds for its running.
Mrs Lynne Evans and Mrs Diane O'Brien can be seen with young Neil O'Brien in the top picture and along with one of Father Christmas's helpers are Lizzie Betts, Kathryne Betts and Louise Burton.

Mrs Vera Elward raises almost £3,000 for St Mary's church organ fund

Vera Elward was 92 when she flew in a microlight to help raise funds for the restoration and enhancement of the organ in Saint Mary The Virgin Church in Bampton. Vera always gave much of her time and love for the church. She ran the Sunday school for about 20 years and would gather the children from their houses as she walked to the Sunday School class. She died peacefully at home on April 9th 2020
