Scope and content

Weald Farm cottages have at times been two cottages and at others, one dwelling. After the death of all members from both families that lived there when they were two cottages, they fell into disrepair over several years. These photographs were taken before anything was done to put the building into good heart but after several basic fittings had been removed. The single story tin extension was added about 1943 to house POWs. Mr Reg Rouse and his family lived there at that time and Reg was farm manager for George Collins. The first two POWs were Italian, lazy and soon got rid of to be replaced by two German POWs. They worked well and stayed for a few years. One made toys for Terry Rouse who was then about 9 years old and one made very comfortable slippers from the plaited hessian from un-picked sacks that were beyond repair. See entry 2017.2003 for photographs of the house being renovated. See also entries 2017.1003 and 2017.1004 for restoration work inside and outside.
