Scope and content
These children are all evacuees from Bow in London. Here, they are being given the fun of some games at Weald Manor.
The young girl at the bottom front on the right is now Mrs Joyce Cotter, neé Chambers and the girl on the right of the middle row in the flowery dress is her older sister Mary. They went back to London to live, but many years later when Joyce was a widow and retired, she came back to Bampton to live.
They had a brother Albert Chambers who was older and billeted in Clanfield. If you do a search under WWII you will find a wonderful sound recording of Albert talking about being an evacuee as well as another one made with Joyce. Leslie Tucker is on the left of the picture and Kenny Howe is next to him.
Joyce is bottom right and her older sister Mary is to her right as you look at the picture and she's wearing a dress covered in little flowers with a white peter pan collar.
The sound recording of Albert can also be found at https://youtu.be/QxUf5KE2PVA
