Scope and content

These letters were recovered from a box full of solicitor’s papers after the publication of this booklet. They show the correspondence in 1834 between Rev. B Price, of Aston, Bampton, and Mr George Harcourt, who was the Member of Parliament for Oxfordshire from 1831 to 1862. Mr Price, who lived in Aston, was hoping to forestall the passing of the Inclosure Bill for Aston and Bampton, pending the passing of a different Bill which he hoped would lessen the hardship suffered by small farmers under the Inclosure Act. The imprint of a seal can still be seen at the top left-hand corner of Mr Price’s letter.
