Scope and content

Early in the twentieth century, before the advent of the combine harvester, corn was cut and taken away in stooks to be threshed out when convenient. In this picture, a belt from the steam driven tractor drives the threshing machine and there are 13 people involved in the work. Some would feed the stooks to the three people on the top who would make sure they were dropped into the right slot in the threshing machine. Some would bag up the corn, others deal with the chaff and yet more would deal with the straw. It was not uncommon to have a hayrick fire caused by sparks coming from the chimney of the steam driven tractor.
