Scope and content

A hedgelaying competition was held on Glebe Farm, Weald courtesy of Simon Collins on March 15th 2014. Hedgelaying is time consuming but the great value in a well layed hedge is that it makes a stock-proof barrier that should last for many years, it could even be 100 years if carefully maintained. it will certainly last long after the posts of a post and rail fence have rotted at their base. It also provides a dense and safe place for birds to nest and it makes a windbreak for stock, something a post and rail fence could never do. Local contestants included Mathew Green and Ray Borrett. It was a young hedge so no chainsaws were allowed.
