Scope and content

On August 4th 2014, 100 years to the day from the outbreak of World War One, the bells were rung half muffled and a service held at the War Memorial in the Market Square led by Rev. David Battersby. The photographs show the muffs being tied on to the clappers, scenes generally in the belfry to show how the bells are hung in the bell frame, Dave Rose and Terry Rouse ringing the bells up and then the ringers ringing the muffled ringing. There is a photograph of Rev David Battersby with Gary Gummer of the Royal British Legion and Tom from the RAF at the War Memorial; also a photograph of the 8 leather muffs used to cover one half of the clapper. There is a short film showing how muffs are put on and with the help of a model made by Ted Dixey, David Rose the tower captain shows the action of the bell, wheel, slider and stay when a bell is rung. https://youtu.be/SOkSBMvmPAc
