Witney Gazette December 3rd 2014. Sisters unite in requesting a public inquiry after each of their brothers died from starvation after their benefits were drastically cut.

Cathie Wood and Gill Thompson, sisters to Mark Wood of Bampton and David Clapson spoke of the "austerity war" at a public meeting in Witney. Mark died weighing just over four and a half stones after an assessment by Atos, for the DWP claimed he was fit to work and his disability benefit was cut. Similarly David, a diabetic, had his benefits were suspended and without electricity he could not refrigerate his insulin.

Airman, Reg Smith, married Albert Radband's sister, Beryl Joan Radband.
He was the brother of twins Peggy and Dolly.
Godfather of Jamie Wheeler.
Marion Paintin said "Joan and Reg had two children Linda and Michael who married my sister Susan and they live at Brading on the Isle of Wight."
Lyn Dunsby said "Linda lives in Lowestoft. She keeps in touch with my mum (Ruth Wheeler.) Joan was my mum's friend but we always called her Aunty Beryl as that was her other name."

Private William Johnson Ox & Bucks Light Infantry 5th Battalion 10677 A Company. His granddaughter Pamela Smith has put together these items.

William was the first young man in Bampton to volunteer and the town awarded him a clock for this. He was also the first soldier to be awarded the Military Medal. This account by Pamela recounts his battles, the conditions, Christmas and much more.

Only five different medals were struck during the war and William was award four.

A newspaper account of the home-coming of William January 1916. William had already been award the Distinguished Conduct Medal for bravery in the field for recovering lieutenant Wood. He was met at Bampton & Brize Norton station by Mr Alfie Bryant in a car kindly lent by Mr Collett. A rapturous welcome awaited him in Bampton and he was presented with a handsome marble clock inscribed "Presented by friends in Bampton to Pte William Johnson O.B.L.I. on being awarded the DCM for gallantry in action 1915.

Robin Shuckburgh has been chairman of Bampton Community Archive for about 8 years (as at 2017) and over-seen the raising of £250,000 to repair the roof of the Old Grammar School in Church View and make the upstairs a usable space again. We are extremely fortunate in Bampton to have people with skills and energy which they are prepared to give freely for the benefit of the whole community.

Dr Alan Cole's life story in his own words

Dr Alan Cole came to practice in Bampton in 1959 and was here long enough to have in some cases, looked after three generations of a family. He was 90 in 2020.
