Relating to Bampton and its hamlets, Haddon, Weald, Cote, Aston, Lew, Chimney and Shifford. Report is written by Arthur Young and seems to use Mr. Singleton of Bampton as an example of of how things were done.

type written document by Lloyd Hughes Owen (Historian and Headmaster of Bampton School in 1950's), obviously transcribed from a vellum book written by Thomas Horde Esquire, Lord of the Manor of Aston and Cote in the parish of Bampton for the benefit of his tenants and landlords of Aston setting out the ancient farming system.
Shadrack Hayden, known as Shadrack 'Shepherd' Hayden was a wonderful singer of folk music at a time when there were still many people who could not read and write and social history was past on very much in folks songs. His life was one of a shepherd and family man and makes for very interesting reading. In the photograph he is seen with one of his grandchildren. Before combine harvesters were the norm, threshing was done any time from November onwards when other harvesting had been done and probably once the cattle had been brought in under cover for the winter.
This picture shows the view down Mount Owen road. The spire of Saint Mary The Virgin church is visible on the skyline and the yellow crop of oilseed rape tells us it is April in 1991
