This article was written for the September 19th issue of the Witney Gazette. It reports that the O2 telecommunications mast near Bampton has been faulty since it was first reported on August 2nd 2018. The people of Bampton always pull together when push comes to shove. Residents got fed up with the litter about the paths and lanes and organised a mass clean-up. This article gives much more detail about it.
A bird was found to have made its nest inside the letterbox at Bampton and Brize Norton Railway station by Mrs Emmie Papworth who along with Mr F G Cannons was a post lady in Bampton about 1960. It was thought to be a member of the tit family and was disturbed only once while the eggs were being hatched.
During a time when the post boxes were emptied by our local postmen and women who went about on a bicycles, Mr Cannons found a bird had laid her eggs in the letterbox at Bampton and Brize Norton railway station.
The Bampton Community Archive is trying to get a list of all the wells that used to be in Bampton. It was the late 1950s before there was mains water to the village. If sufficient information can be gathered an exhibition on wells in Bampton will be put on.
