Shirley Boyce was an Evacuee to Bampton during World War II and has written an account of her time in Bampton staying at a Manor House (Weald Manor?). Which had been divided into flats. She later stayed in Aston. The photo is of evacuated children from Bow, London playing in the grounds of Weald Manor in 1940. Two boys Kenny Howe and Leslie Tucker were billeted in New Road with Mr and Mrs Whighting?

With almost 2 million refugees from the war in Ukraine and many more still desperately trying to get out of the country, a sale was held in the Village Hall on Saturday March 12th 2022 to raise funds to purchase essential items for these desperate people.

Newspaper Cutting about a dig on the Brize Norton Airfield which has uncovered several different types of aircraft bits from 45 German aircraft captured by the Allies in 1945 and taken to the base for testing, and USA aircraft from the time that the USAF were based at Brize in 1950's. Brigadier Rupert Crowdy OBE served in the army in India and Burma and afterwards he organised the 'shipping' of coal into Berlin during the Berlin Siege. In 1962 he was appointed Aide-de-Camp to the Queen.

Peter Davis from Church Street put on a detailed and very interesting exhibition for the Bampton Community Archive in the Old Grammar School, Church Close about the Witney Airfield. The only suggestion of an airfield in the area now is in the names of three local roads, De Havilland Way, Range Road and Richard Jones Road.

Damaged Spitfires and Hurricanes aircraft damaged during WWII were serviced here. The airfield was important in both WWI and WWII. It opened in 1918 and closed in 1951.

The site was used as an RAF training unit, a base for tennis, horse racing and motorcycle speedway as well as for Witney and Oxford Aero Club and Witney Aeronautical College.

The catalogue of this exhibition, full of really interesting photos of the airfield is still on sale in the Vesey room.

On August 4th 2014 a short service of Remembrance was held by the War Memorial in the Market Square, in remembrance of the outbreak of WWI. Reverend David Battersby conducted the service and Gary Gummer held the Standard of the Royal British Legion.

A talk about the arms industry during the First World War and beyond will be held at the village hall in October 2014. Sue Smith and Symon Hill gave the talk on October 23rd.
