Scope and content
Before our National Health System came into being in July 1948, people could pay a little each week into a club or Friendly Society and if they should find themselves unable to work through illness or accident, the society would give them enough money to feed the family and pay their rent.
Men would wear their best clothes when 'on the club' because no man would wear his best clothes and do a manual job so it was a way of trying to prove that they weren't both 'claiming help of the club' and working for cash.
Faith, Hope, Love and Happiness are mottoes on the poster and the four seasons are shown in little pictures.
